Become a Master Training Counselor

The NRA Training Department maintains a very select and small group of experienced NRA Master Training Counselors. If you have met all the criteria and have been performing admirably as a Senior Training Counselor, you may be invited to consider taking the next step to be at the absolute pinnacle of the NRA Basic Firearms and Instructor Training Program. MTCs are selected to represent the NRA Training Department on a national level, evaluating, developing and mentoring NRA's Senior Training Counselor cadre.

The minimum qualifications for MTC candidate consideration are:

  • NRA Appointed Senior Training Counselor in all NRA basic course disciplines, including Range Safety Officer.
  • At least two years of experience as a Senior Training Counselor.
  • Conduct at least two TC workshops as a Senior Training Counselor with at least six new Training Counselor candidates at each workshop.
  • Supervise a Senior Training Counselor in organizing, conducting and administering a TC Workshop.

The NRA Training Department periodically evaluates areas in the country that may have a need for MTCs. The NRA Training Counselor Program Coordinator will seek NRA Senior Training Counselors who possess the experience and reputation within the NRA Training Department desired for MTC candidate consideration. In areas of the country that have very few, or no, MTCs, the NRA Training Department may contact you to determine your desire for advancement and to assist you in sponsoring your own workshop. The NRA will select a Master Training Counselor to evaluate your workshop and make a recommendation to the NRA Training Department concerning your ability to be successful as an NRA Appointed Master Training Counselor!

The NRA Training Department will consider performance as a Senior Training Counselor. We will evaluate all resources available in our decision process concerning your ability to represent NRA as a Master Training Counselor. Recommendations will be submitted to the Manager, NRA Training Department and the Director, Education & Training Division for approval/disapproval. MTCs will be appointed for a period of five years; however, performance and activity will be re-evaluated annually. MTCs who do not participate in a Training Counselor Workshop during their five-year appointment will relinquish their appointment as an MTC.
