By Mike Krei, Director NRA Competitive Shooting Division October, 2008
New Media Coverage for NRA Championships 2008 brought a number of new media resources to the NRA National Championships at Camp Perry. We had the pleasure to host NRA Live's Cam and Company twice this year. John Popp, Executive Director, and I worked out a schedule that brought Cam and Company in live for the First Shot Ceremony and the pistol practice day, and then again for the NRA/Springfield M1A Match.
There are many details to be accomplished to prepare for the live transmission over the Internet. NRA's Statistical Director Dot Priesman and her crew made room for the make shift studio in the back of the Statistical Office. Cam and Company crew brought in a truck load of equipment and on broadcast day a satellite truck was driven in from Cleveland for actual signal transmission. The equipment sucked up a ton of electricity and unfortunately caused a few blown fuses and tripped circuit breakers that interrupted our first day of programming: however, we were fortunate to complete the full three hours of programming. Interviews were conducted with volunteers, competitors, military personnel and match officials. These interviews have been archived on the NRA website at www.nra.org. To view all of the coverage from the 2008 NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships, click on the "Browse Archives" button on the right side of the page.
Camp Perry Live was a new blog that was updated daily by NRA's Media Relations Division staffers Dan Feldbusch and Danielle Sturgis. Pictures were uploaded for everyone to follow many of the behind the scenes activities, official scores, and award ceremonies. This blog that has been expanded to include archives of the Camp Perry entries and can be accessed at www.nrablog.com..
Hundreds of hometown news releases were sent to newspapers across the country. Each competitor was asked to fill out a form with their general information to be sent to their hometown newspapers. Local sports writers were invited to visit Camp Perry and even compete in the M1A match; these writers gave NRA dozens of articles and access to hundreds of thousands of readers.
The NRA Competitive Shooting Division will continue to work with in-house media resources and news outlets across the country to give the sport of competitive shooting the best possible promotion and public image.
